This was my first visit to the museum, and although the first floor was closed due to Covid restrictions, I still really enjoyed my visit and look forward to going back.

    Disabled Access In and Around

To enter the museum there are ramps on either side of a few steps. The steps are not marked and there are no handrails so I’d say be careful when going up these ramps you don’t trip over the edge. Doors are automatic throughout. There is a large glass lift that takes you to all floors. The cafe/shop area is also accessible and very spacious (this is through the reception and through the Grand Hall area).

    Parking & Transport

I came via the Edinburgh trams which are great for wheelchair access in my opinion. I got off the York Place tram stop and rolled 5-10 minutes to the museum on Queen Street. I believe buses also go along these streets and the streets behind however I am unsure about the parking situation.

    Accessible Toilets

Good access inside however the door swings out onto a tight corner which is also shared with the men’s bathroom - meaning if someone walks out of that bathroom and you swing the door at the same time, you may give someone a bump. Yes I’m talking from experience but he told me I did not cause any serious damage 😬 I was able to turn inside the toilet area with my powerchair but it was quite tight as there are also bins and a baby change shelf in this toilet. The red cord was hanging to the floor which was great. Signage for the toilets is also clear throughout. On level 2 there are a few toilets throughout the display rooms but I did not visit these and i’m not sure if they are accessible toilets. No Changing Places.

Very helpful and knowledgeable which makes you feel at ease.

    Additional Information

We had to book tickets in advance to enter the museum. We booked tickets for 2pm and they say that you should arrive no later than 15 minutes past your booked time or you won’t be allowed in. They also advise that you complete your visit within an hour so it does not become too crowded. If you go at a busy time you are to wait outside so wrap up warm! Inside there was also automatic hand sanitiser stations throughout and stickers on the floor which show you the one way system and how to maintain a safe distance from others.
