Come to the Roman Army Museum and immerse yourself in the life of a Roman soldier. The museum includes three galleries, a high definition film theatre, and a Roman classroom with a holographic teacher. Based at the site of Magna Roman Fort the museum is situated next to one of the most complete and picturesque sections of Hadrian’s Wall.

Museum with most beautiful accessible loo in the world

The Roman Army Museum complements the nearby Vindolanda museum, being more of an 'experience' than an archaeological site. The 3D film about life as a Roman soldier was great, and there are lots of other interesting displays. Everything was accessible on my small scooter.

Okay access throughout

Good parking and access at the entrance. No automatic doors, but helpful staff who would open them. Once inside, very steep slope down to the museum. There is a hand rail. Had to go down backwards ( manual chair user but if you have very good back wheel balance you might manage down, using the handrail for safety) . However, getting back up was not possible without assistance. The next couple of levels of the museum had much better slopes that could be managed independantly. Disabled toilet was on the lower level and was large and easy to access.

The Museum is fully accessible to wheelchair users and has a level approach. You should allow at least 90 minutes to go round the museum. A shop and coffee shop are available for use of visitors within the entry level. Quieter times at the Museum are typically before 10:30am and after 3:30pm. These periods can offer a more peaceful experience for visitors who prefer a calmer environment. Please note that audio and visual elements in the Museum remain on throughout the day.

These objects give you an insight into life here on the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, 2,000 years ago. A curated selection of objects from both the Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda Fort and Museum on Soundcloud via our website. Assistance animals are welcome in our Museum. All our staff have been trained in Visual Impairment Awareness Training, Autism Awareness, and some have Level 1 BSL and are Dementia Friends.
