Reliving a childhood memory - the tidal causeway to St Michael's Mount New
Visit date:
This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Wheelchair, Powerchair, Mobility Scooter
Overview
The cause way is flat, but it certainly is not level! The blocks have big cracks and are very uneven, any wheelchair attempting to cross the causeway needs offroad capability. Also the boat taxi's are not wheelchair accessible so if you are attempting it check tide times to ensure you can get back. Once over to the island you can access the cafe, the mini museum and information centre (which is interesting) and some of the lower garden. The National Trust have a powered "Mobility Scooter" that is for use on a first come first served basis. When the tide is out the Marion beach is solid and great for a wheelchair especially if you have a powered add on like a Tri-ride. The nearest carpark has attendants that have access to beach wheelchairs which are free to use and offered on a first come first served basis. Many of the shops are completely inaccessible but the shop owners are quick to come out and ask if they can help by bringing anything out. We also visited a local produce market in All Saints Hall
Transport & Parking
Ample bluebadge spaces but they are quite narrow if you have a side access WAV with a lift! There is a regular bus service.
Access
There is a level and smooth concrete promenade with a couple of sloped access points to the beach. There are public WC including a radar operated Accessible WC
Toilets
50m from nearest beach access is a new building with accessible WC - I did not use it There is an accessible WC on the harbour/quay on St Michael's Mount - I did not use it
Staff
Both the council carpark attendants and National Trust staff approached me and bent over backwards to help.
