The Anglers Rest is a unique and special place. In 2013 it was purchased by over 300, mostly local people. It is now run for the benefit of the community and includes a pub, cafe and Post Office. Walkers, cyclists and dogs welcome. Vegetarians, vegan and gluten free catered for. The Anglers Rest has 2 designated disabled parking spaces adjacent to the café entrance. The café is situated across 3 levels with the entrance from the car park on the highest level and the entrance at the front of the building and the café counter on the lowest level. There is also an accessible outside seating area with 2 wheelchair friendly picnic benches. There is an accessible toilet which is on the same level as the top level in the café.

Wheelchair users do not feel welcome

As a local pub, the Anglers deserves credit for atmosphere and being a community owned pub. As far as accessibility is concerned though, it's all rather half hearted. In the evenings, the bell mentioned in the pub's information has not worked for years, you need to sit or stand in the rain until whilst you ring the pub and ask somewhere to let you in. The toilet in the main part of the pub is inaccessible in a wheelchair, you need to go back of the locked door again, around to the top of the pub and back in through the locked cafe door.

Welcoming, friendly pub

We visited each day for a week with visually impaired clients from our centre and had a lovely week and great pub lunches. The staff were very kind and attentive. Some of our clients were delighted to be able to access the Post Office and craft shop that are incorporated in this community pub.

Disabled Access at The Anglers Rest

There are three main entrances, two on the front, one directly into the Post Office and café, the other into the pub. There is bell on the outside of the entrance to the Post Office to request assistance. The road outside the pub where the main entrances are situated has a narrow pavement that is uneven in places. Both entrances at the front have small steps. It is possible to drop off customers outside the main entrances. The third entrance is directly from the car park into the café with level access from the car park.

The Anglers Rest has free car parking with 45 car parking spaces, including 2 designated disabled parking spaces adjacent to the café entrance. The car park surface is tarmac with no kerbs. The lower car park is on a slight slope but there is a steep slope to the upper car park. The lower car park, which includes the disabled spaces, is well lit at night.
