Overview
The Sill is the National Discovery Centre for the Northumberland National Park. We were so impressed - its just opened and they have a full changing places toilet in the visitors area, highly accessible cafe and ramped access to the roof garden for views along Hadrian Wall. The exhibition area had a lot of displays accessible from wheelchair height and was very interactive. We had a great day out and felt it had been designed very considerately for wheelchair users - even the circular benches outside had been designed with space at each one for a wheelchair to access the table.
Transport & Parking
The Sill has just opened and the signage for the disabled bays are small so are confusing and other vehicles had parked in them. You have to pay for parking with a blue badge but entrance to the centre is free so we didn't mind
Access
There are so few places in the countryside with a full changing places toilet. The building has been designed so you can access the roof garden and get great views of Northumberland from there - the external ramp to get there is wheelchair accessible and there is well thought through access internally
Toilets
There is a full changing places size toilet available with height adjustable shower stretcher/changing bench as well as shower and toilet. There are also additional disabled toilet facilities - the place is new. clean and well organised
Staff
Very helpful - the cafe was busy so we required some help in clearing tables and rearranging chairs to enable wheelchair access to where we wanted to sit but the staff were very attentive and ensured we were treated very well
