Overview
This is a lovely place, just by the side of the road into Haroldswick. We had planned to visit as part of a motorhome road trip around Unst. We knew I wouldn't be able to access all of it but were happy to do what we could. It is free but they ask for a donation. There is a reconstruction of a Viking longhouse, based on over 60 archaelogical sites on Unst. Then there is a Viking ship.
Transport & Parking
There is a reasonable parking area next to the project. It is rough ground but level and certainly doable with an off-road chair or freewheel type attachment. You are also allowed to stop here overnight if you have a self-contained motorhome.
Access
The longhouse is all level (no steps) but the ground is not paved, just mud. The doorways are too narrow for most wheelchairs. I anticipated that and took two walking sticks so I could leave my trike outside and just walk in. It's not that big and there are wooden seats inside. The ship has a path around the outside which is nice and wide. There is a fairly steep ramp upto the entry point but then steps to get over the edge of the boat. Again, I managed with sticks but it isn't that accessible... but then Vikings probably weren't thinking about wheelchair access when the invaded.
Toilets
There are no toilets here at all.
Staff
There are no staff here. The site is always open and relies on an honesty box for donations.
