    About

Our landmark gallery is the largest exhibition space in the South East outside of London. Designed by the multi award-winning David Chipperfield Architects, the gallery sits on Margate seafront, on the same site where JMW Turner stayed when visiting the town in the 19th Century. From here, the building offers sensational views over the North Kent Coast, captures the dramatic light effects and gives you a unique opportunity to engage with and explore world-class art. Through our rolling programme of temporary exhibitions, events and learning opportunities, we make intriguing links between historical and contemporary art, presenting art in new, dynamic ways. Admission to the gallery is free.

Enjoyable visit to an impressively accessible gallery with enormous lift

Turner Contemporary has galleries of modern art. Please note it is called after J. M. W. Turner as he stayed in Margate in a house on the site of the gallery, when we visited there were no Turner paintings on display, so please do not go expecting to see Turner's art work. The gallery is impressively accessible with step free access throughout. It has one of the largest public lifts I have seen and accessible toilets. It is a modern building right on Margate's sea front. Well worth visiting if you are in Margate or making a special trip for if you like modern art.

    Turner Contemporary, Margate

This is a very accessible venue. The main entrance is up a large flight of steps so consequently the ramp is very long which may prove difficult for anybody who walks with difficulty. Once you are up there everything is totally accessible. Shop, cafe and usually an exhibition on the ground floor then an ENORMOUS lift takes you to the first floor and the main exhibition. The doors are heavy but staff are helpful . The cafe is quite small and requires skill and care to negotiate with a scooter but again the staff are very accommodating
