Overview

For the people of Goole, West Park is a wonderful green space, with play area for children, games areas for sports, fields, paths, walks, etc. There is a cafe, run by a local charity, and a small garden centre (same charity, the Green Team).

Transport & Parking

4.5

Access to the parking area is down a small residential street (well signposted from the main road). The entrance area is a little narrow and has a height limit. The car park has recently been extended and now has plenty of parking. There are several blue badge spaces.

Access

The path around the main park is good quality and there are several smaller paths that go to the band stand in the middle. The back path has a few uneven bits, but nothing too bad. Around the field is a dirt track. This is quite uneven and in winter, it gets waterlogged. I generally take my freewheel or mountain trike if I want to go all the way round the field. Park run uses the field and so isn't a great one for wheelchairs, which is a shame. Apparently, some funding has been provided to improve the field path and make it asphalt and wide enough for wheelchairs and pushchairs. This is due to be done in the next year.

Toilets

3

There are two accessible toilets. At one end of the car park is a RADAR locked toilet, which is very basic and not really maintained now. However, it is often cleaner than the main one. Next to the cafe is an accessible toilet which is open to all. I think this is also the baby changing facility. It is currently used by all, due to Covid restrictions, and is therefore busy and often not as clean as it should be. Due to the nature of the park attracting many young people, we have often found groups of teenies playing in the toilet and had to wait ages for them to come out.

Staff

5

Most of the staff onsite are either staff or volunteers of the Green Team, a local charity that provides work opportunities for disabled people, people with mental health issues and the long-term unemployed. They teach them a range of skills connected with gardening/horticulture and/or catering. They run the cafe and have polytunnels and a little garden centre. They are always really friendly and polite. You just sometimes have to be patient as service can be slow at times, due to the nature of the individuals and the fact that they are learning on the job.
