Changing Places Awareness Day #CPAD25

Today is Changing Places Awareness Day – a chance to spotlight the toilets that make a real difference to many disabled people and their families.
What is a Changing Places toilet?
Changing Places toilets are larger accessible toilets designed to meet the needs of people who need more space and equipment than a standard accessible toilet offers. Each one is at least 12 square metres and includes an adult-sized, height-adjustable changing bench, a peninsular toilet, and a ceiling hoist.
These toilets are not just helpful – they are essential. Without them, many people are unable to go out, take part in everyday activities, or travel with confidence.
What our community of disabled people, friends, family members and carers tell us:
When it comes to accessibility, lived experience matters. Euan’s Guide is created by people who know what it’s like to plan ahead, face uncertainty, or turn up somewhere that didn’t deliver what it promised. Every year, we run the UK’s largest Access Survey to understand what our community are experiencing.
The Euan's Guide Access Survey supported by the Motability Scheme had over 6,000 responses. When we asked about Changing Places toilets, this is what we heard:
• 16% said they or someone in their group used Changing Places toilets
• Only 22% found them easy to find
• Under half (48%) said they were easy to access
• Only 46% said the equipment was ready to use and working
These figures highlight an ongoing challenge: even when a Changing Places toilet exists, it may be hard to locate or not usable when needed. That’s not just frustrating – it’s a barrier..
Why reviews matter
One person told us, “We simply cannot go out for a day unless one is available.” Another said, “It just ruins our day and we have to leave.” This shows just how important it is to know what to expect before heading out.
That is where your reviews come in. If you have visited a venue with a Changing Places toilet – whether it worked well or not – please leave a review on Euan’s Guide. Your insights help others plan with confidence and could make the difference between staying in and going out.
The statistic that only 22% of people find Changing Places toilets easy to find says it all. That is the power of shared information – and why we need more people sharing their experiences on the website. More voices equal better choices.
