Overview

This was a pre-arranged outing with Charlie, the warden. She wanted to check the accessibility of a new footpath leading from the visitor centre to the Layer Breton Causeway, where the majority of the most interesting birds are seen. The route is circular and is 3.5 miles. At the moment it is only possible to complete about 50% of the route, but there are plans to make the rest accessible. The route took 1hr30 mins and was peaceful and rather beautiful. The footpath is well signposted and comfortable to negotiate on my scooter. The path is wide enough for anyone accompanying a wheelchair user to walk alongside.

Transport & Parking

5

There are clearly marked disabled bays in the car park next to the visitors centre, which is a good starting point for the outing. If it is after 5, when the centre closes, you can easily park on the causeway next to the centre.

Access

Signage is written and reasonably clear.

Toilets

5

There is an accessible loo in the centre, easy to negotiate with plenty of room for a carer.

Staff

The warden, Charlie, who went with me, was particularly keen to know whether I considered the footpath to be both comfortable and safe.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

I would recommend the footpath to scooter and wheelchair users. I also think that anyone using a walking aid who is capable of walking the distance would enjoy the walk. In all cases I would check with centre staff to check that the path is not too muddy. It is not tarmaced.
