Lovely Spot in Fife

4

Visit date:

Overview

Historic ruins in beautiful grounds, with views across the Forth.

Transport & Parking

4.5

We drove and parked at the main entrance. There is room for a large van down the seemingly narrow drive, with two large accessible spots and parking for about five additional vehicles. The accessible spots are on old worn cobblestones, and could be a hazard for those unstable on their feet.

Access

2.5

There were clearly printed interpretation signs throughout the castle, and we were also offered a pocket guidebook (for a £2.50 fee). As an ancient monument, the castle floors are cobblestones or brick, and are uneven, with narrow spiral staircases to reach the upper levels (including the famous painted ceiling). The gardens and doocot are easily navigable (although the doocot had no additional interior lighting, so be careful). The ticket office, gift shop and tea room are easliy accessible to all.

Toilets

1.5

The loos are on the ground level, with no extra stairs or steps. They are small, and definitely not accessible to those requiring a wheelchair. I did not see an accessible loo option.

The ticket agent was very friendly, and offered additional tour insight.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The castle has an interesting history, and the painted ceiling was of particular note. Views across the Forth to Edinburgh are just beautiful. And I recommend following up a visit to the castle by crossing through the bowling field, over to the path down to 12th century St. Fillans Church and graveyard, and possibly down to the Silversand Beach.
