I am a disabled person. I have experience of challenges around: a hidden impairment and moving around.
Overall Rating
Excellent
I enjoyed a lovely sunny morning in Albert Park and the Visitor Centre with its big glass doors and stained glass windows looked great in the light. It was a weekday in autumn, so it was quiet, but it was still open and felt very welcoming. It makes it much easier to enjoy your outing to the park when you know that there is somewhere accessible to go to the toilet, an inside space where you can sit down without having to buy anything, somewhere that even has sockets. It is even better when that place is clean and nicely decorated.
Disabled Access In and Around
Good
The doors to the Visitor Centre are up on a raised platform that goes along the front of the whole building. There are three steps with railings on either side and contrast markings as well as a ramp on the front left of the platform. Once you are up on the platform, everything is one one level. The flooring is even, asphalt on the ramp and paving stones on the platform. The doors are automatic sliding doors and there is another set on the opposite side leading out to the roller rink. The ticket counter for the rink is to the left just before the back doors and the counter is low enough to use from a seated position. There are moveable chairs with backrests at the tables in the middle and at the sides.
Accessible facilities: Single-level venue, Step-free entrance, Seating at regular intervals
Parking & Transport
Average
I travelled to this place by walk or wheel
If you are driving, the closest option for parking is the Albert Park Car Park on Park Vale Road, which is near the closest entrance to the Visitor Centre. (When entering the park, go straight ahead and take the second right turn, basically going around the playground.) Unfortunately, the car park is not very big and does not have any disabled parking bays. There is another car park like this on the other end of Park Vale Road, from where you would have to walk or wheel 300 metres or 5 minutes, which is just slightly more than from the other car park. The best option for public transport is to enter the park via the main entrance and then go all the way to the other end of the main path. That is a 0.5-mile/10-minute walk or wheel. The northbound/centre-bound bus stops closest to the main entrance off Linthorpe Road are St Barnabas Church (12, 13, 17A, 17B, 29, 63), which is 240 metres/a 3-minute walk or wheel away and Ayresome Gardens (13, 17A, 17B, 29, 63), 220 metres/3 minutes. In the other direction, the Dorman Museum stop (12, 13, 17A, 17B, 29, 63) is the closest you can get to the gates without turning into the little car park (about 90 metres). There is a small carpark with 10 spaces, including 2 disabled parking bays outside the Dorman Museum at the main entrance to the park. There is also some on-street parking on Linthorpe Road to the south as well as on Kensington Road and streets off it.
Accessible facilities: Dedicated on-site parking, Public or on street parking
Accessible Toilets
Excellent
The Visitor Centre has an accessible bathroom and a Changing Places toilet. The door to the medium-sized accessible bathroom is on the left wall of the main space. The door opens to the outside left. No key is needed to access the bathroom. There is no door opener. The handle on the outside is a lever handle. There is a handrail and a coathook on the back of the door and it locks with a twist knob. There is a hand dryer and large mirror to your left when you come in. The sink is on the wall to your right. The toilet and the bins are at the back wall. There is a fixed vertical and a horizontal handrail to the right of the toilet that can be lifted and moved out of the way and a fixed horizontal handrail on the wall to the *right left* of the toilet. The flush is a spatula lever on the side of the cistern. The toilet paper dispenser is to the left of the toilet. There is space for a left-side transfer. The red cord is to the right of the toilet. The bins are on the wall at the side of the transfer space, but they are not blocking it. There are vertical handrails on either side of the sink. The sink is a small wall-mounted sink, but there is a built-in box below it and the tap has a short lever. There is no mirror above the sink but a paper towel dispenser (empty when I visited) and a wall-mounted soap dispenser. There is a hand dryer on the wall next to the door. The door to the Changing Places bathroom is on the right wall at the back of the main space. It needs to be unlocked with a RADAR key. The door opens to the outside left and the handle is a vertical metal bar above the lock. There is a horizontal grab rail on the inside of the door. The door locks by *pulling the lever handle upwards. The toilet is on the wall to the right. There is space for both a right and left-side transfer. There are vertical grab rails on the wall and moveable horizontal ones to either side of the toilet. The emergency cord is to the left of the toilet. The flush is a spatula lever on the side of the cistern. Looking at the wall, there are partitions on wheels on the left and bins and a colostomy shelf on the right. Above the bins is also where the ceiling track hoist is positioned by default. The sink is on the right side of the back wall. It is a large height-adjustable sink with a long lever handle. There are vertical handrails on the wall on either side of the sink and dispensers for soap and disinfectant mounted on the wall above and to the left. To the right of the sink, there is a paper towel dispenser mounted on the wall and another red emergency cord in the corner. There is an electric handshower on the left side of the back wall with a height-adjustable changing bench on wheels in front of it. There are no handrails in the shower area. There is a red cord in the corner to the left of the shower. The changing bench has a padded topper with raised sides and a drain at the bottom and a pillow/headrest from the same material. The height is adjusted with buttons on the frame. One end can also be raised for a seated position. There is a dispenser for paper sheets on the wall to the left, but it was empty when I visited.
