When I arrived in Montrose I went to the loo at the train station and found it was in use. I decided to pop into the nearby Aldi to use the loo there, so I thought I'd review it while I was there. How was it? Pretty good!

Disabled Access In and Around

Average

There are automatic sliding doors at the entrance and exit to the store. The aisle widths are more than appropriate for most mobility devices, although they may get cluttered with people at busier times. The store is on one level and the floors are grey speckled linoleum. Signage is clear enough with overhead checkout numbers and toilet signage. Audio announcements are made often to advise of checkouts opening and closing. Unlike many supermarkets, Aldi does not play music, which may be a sensory consideration for some. There are no alternative formats in use as far as I could see.

I arrived at Montrose Railway station, which is next to the store, and took the lift up to the walkway and down on the the other side. Those driviing there are 9 accessible parking space, each with hatched markings on either side, and approximately 95 standard parking spaces. There is also a very convenient bus station at the entrance where the 9, 30, 30A, 30B, 47, 47B, 52 and 107 services operate.

Accessible Toilets

The toilet has a lightweight manual door that opens outwards to the left. The door does not need a RADAR key and is secured from the inside with a twist lock. The toilet is small but has enough room for a powerchair user and several other people. It has grey speckled linoleum flooring. The toilet pan is located on the rear wall, which has white tiles, while the wall to the right (your left when seated) has black tiles. Because of this the grabrail to the left is grey, while the rail to the right is white which means both contrast well against the wall, although it would be better if they were consistent. There is plenty of space for a left side transfer to the toilet pan, which has a grey contrasting seat. The flush is located on the same side as the transfer space. The red cord hangs to the floor and is on the left when seated. The sink has a small basin, a lever style mixer tap, a mirror and grabrails on both sides. To the right there is a hand dryer. The loo was pretty clean. Good job Aldi.
