Beautiful walks but not the easiest terrain

3.5

Overview

We visited while we were on holiday in the area. I knew that some of the walks are not accessible but the Fairy Trail and a couple of other walks looked doable. We started off on a difficult route but turned back and did the Fairy Trail which was really pretty. There are some of the biggest trees in the UK here.

Transport & Parking

4.5

We arrived by motorhome. There are two routes in, depending on which direction you travel from. The route from the east is a narrow, steep road which is not suitable for big vehicles, so we approached through the village of Cairndow which is pretty. The car park is just inside the big black gates. It's a bit free flow... no designated bays or anything and it's on quite a hill so I had to be careful getting in and out of the motorhome.

Access

First off, I think this is only wheelchair accessible if you have some kind of off-road chair. I used my mountain trike and it was manageable but I did need a bit of help on a couple of steeper hills - more so coming down than up. The paths are soft and like bark chippings, so it takes more effort than usual to move around. That said, most of the paths are at least wide enough for a big wheelchair. The Fairy Trail is the easiest route and well signposted (though I missed the first sign originally). If you take the route that goes straight from the car park, it gets narrow and steep quite quickly. The Fairy Trail is to one side off the path near the car park.

Toilets

0

No toilets as far as I know. We used our own.

Staff

0

No staff either. I think they have staff at busy times but otherwise you pay via an honesty box.
