Overview

We drove to bakewell on 12th August from Sheffield. I am an ambulatory wheelchair user - I can walk short distances with a walking stick and support, but on bad days I cant do this. Parking was difficult - There is quite a lot of parking but limited disabled spaces and a lot of spaces are on chunky gravel which I could not self-propel over. The paths are really uneven, and there are potholes on the roads. The paving slabs on the paths werent flat, so I had to proceed very carefully to not get thrown over my chair. They also slope a lot so it can be extremely hard to self-propel. A lot of the pavements are very narrow also, but not impossible to traverse. Almost every shop and restaurant we saw had a large step for entry, so we didnt access most of them which was a shame. We managed to get into one of the pubs for lunch but my partner had to help boost me over the small step for entry. We visited Lick ice cream shop which is a total gem. There is no step for entry, though the pavement outside is very narrow which makes it tricky to turn into. The shop is fantastic, all dairy free and caters to allergies well. We visited the recreation grounds also which was nice, lots of grass for the kids to explore and a great play park. Unfortunately I was really disappointed with my visit. It really wasn't accessible to me. I did enjoy the trip but I probably wouldnt go back unless I was having a day where I can walk more.
