Balmossie is a small station in Monifieth with only two services per platform Monday-Saturday. I visited the station while travelling along the nearby walking path and stopped in to review it. I encountered difficulty at first when trying to access platform 1 due to an outward opening gate at the top of the ramp. I attempted to use the bridge To reach platform 2 but it was far too steep even with a power attachment. I reached the first level but the apex of the bridge was so steep that it was impossible to cross. Definitely one of the less impressive stations I've been to.

Disabled Access In and Around

Accessing platform 1 was difficult because there is a ramp leading up to the platform with an outward opening gate that is secured by a latch. This makes the gate difficult to open for people with dexterity issues as well as dangerous for wheelchair users. I expect the gate is there to prevent children or animals from getting onto the track, but if it opened inward it would give clearance for wheelchairs and buggies. On this platform there is a small rain shelter with metal seats and a high metal bench. The platform edge is clearly marked. Overhead signage is clear with platform numbers, passenger assistance meeting points and departure information on scrolling LED screens. There are no ticket machines on either platform. If you're looking to cross between the platforms, I wish you luck. I attempted to use the footbridge, which is just beyond the entrance to platform 1, and I found it impossible. At the foot of the first ramp there are metal barriers on either side to encourage cyclists to dismount. Beyond this there is a severe incline, which I managed to ascend with my power attachment. There is a short level section before another, steeper incline to reach the top. I tried and failed to conquer this. I worry a powerchair would simply roll back. Although I didn't see the other side during my visit, I used Google Maps to check what it was like, and it is the same. I can say that if you're arriving at platform 2 via South Balmossie Street the access to that platform is level, although there is a gate to contend with. There is no rain shelter on platform 2 and seating consists of a single wooden bench. Each platform has a smart card reader.

There is no drop off point at this location and no parking at or within a reasonable distance of the station. The closest bus stop is half a mile away on Ferry Road where the 73, 73A, 73B, 73C, 74, 74A, 74B, 74C, 79A and 79C services operate.
