This Changing Places toilet was listed on the Changing Places website, so I was surprised to find it here! It was a large toilet that needed a RADAR to enter. It had a height-adjustable bench with toilet facilities, a ceiling hoist, a height-adjustable toilet and a height-adjustable sink. Additional features in there were a baby-change table, a privacy screen, a large mirror, a colostomy shelf and two emergency red cords.

Disabled Access In and Around

There are different entrances to the bus station depending on how you approach it. If you are arriving by car and parking in the car park above it, there are lifts that travel between the car parking levels and the ground floor. There are two pedestrian entrances on either side of the building. These both have automatic doors which open as you approach them. There was a tactile path in some areas of the building, such as from one of the entrances to the main bus stand waiting area. It was a dark coloured tactile path against a cream coloured floor. A lot of the walkways were very wide and the signage was all really clear. There was signage for the toilets as you travelled through the bus station. There were green signs next to each toilet door but the colour contrast on them wasn’t great. There were also metal symbol signs on each door as well as the green signs.

The Changing Places toilet was opened with a RADAR key. Both doors opened outwards for these toilets. There was a height-adjustable changing bench with shower facilities, a baby-change table, a ceiling hoist, a privacy screen, a height-adjustable toilet and a height-adjustable sink. The equipment was all in good working order and the remotes to control the hoist and bench had been placed in clear, easy to reach locations. There were signs on the wall with information about the equipment and how to use it safely. There was also a small colostomy shelf on the wall near the toilet. The toilet had a height-adjustable grab rail on either side of it and a very large flush button behind it. It was the first time I’d ever seen a height-adjustable toilet! There was space on either side of the toilet for a left- and right-side transfer. The toilet paper dispenser was on the wall and it was quite far away from the toilet itself which was a bit of an issue. There were two emergency red cords that hung freely to the floor. One was by the toilet and the other was by the bench and baby-changing table.
