Exceeded my expectations so much that I'm planning to return
Extremely pleasantly surprised, as I was expecting a lot less from a French 3-star hotel.
The hotel was our base for visiting the D-Day beaches and museums after a short overnight crossing from Newhaven to Dieppe with Transmarche Ferries.
Arriving just after 5:30 pm, there were 2 unoccupied blue badge bays. The French seem to be very considerate and leave the bays free for Blue Badge holders. The reception was up a short slope, easy for my powerchair, but a self-propelled user would probably need help. No lowered counter, but I was asked to check in and used a clipboard provided by the receptionist, who spoke good English. I was even offered a sweet from the reception desk jar! Directions to the room were provided, and the menu for the restaurant was explained, including special diet provisions for my Coeliac gluten-free diet.
My room was back down the slope across the car park to a slope with a bend that led to my room. The room itself was large with space on both sides of the double bed for my wheelchair. No wardrobe, but a hanging space with coat hangers and a shelved side bay. A desk table with a kettle, tea, coffee and biscuits, an angle poise lamp and a remote control for the wall-mounted TV were a pleasant and unexpected surprise. The bathroom was a large wetroom with an excellent high-level toilet seat that could be turned for the best transfer position (why can't UK hotels provide these?) The shower had an easy-to-reach shower head, rather than the UK's popular rain shower, and a shower seat on the wall. Water pressure was outstandingly good, and the water was hot. Brilliant! Towels were on a rail far enough to reach and be out of reach of the water from the adjustable showerhead on a riser rail. A large fixed sink was easily accessible, and toiletries were provided. The bed was a large double and extremely comfortable. at standard height. Heating was through an electric wall heater that was very easy to adjust and heated the room extremely quickly. I left the bathroom door open with the heating on to warm the bathroom, and it did so without a problem. There is no air conditioning, but there are rooms above, so I would not anticipate heat being a problem during the summer. The real room bonus for me was the metal window shutter operated by an electric button on the wall. This made the room extremely dark at night and would protect from the heat during the summer. My room had a locked adjoining room door that needed to be unlocked on both sides by the occupants to give access. The noise was minimal. I stayed two nights and slept well, unusual for me. Extra bed covers and pillows stored in laundry fresh bags were available in the shelved area, had I needed them. The French electric sockets were located at the desk table and beside the bed. I did not add the restaurant evening meal at the time of booking. After reassurances at reception, I decided to try it, and the food was of outstanding quality and value AND cooked separately to ensure it was free from contamination and gluten-free. I had the starter self-service as much as you can eat starter (entree), followed by steak with fries and French green beans. The portions were good size and two courses were very good value at €18:95 (approx £14:50) I was pleasantly surprised to receive a fillet steak. I did not eat breakfast.
I booked directly through the Campanile website, stating I needed a wheelchair accessible room. I also called the hotel before making the final payment to confirm my requirements. My booking was made a year in advance to be certain of my room requirements. Those travelling with me had three single rooms at the back of the hotel, and my room was at the front. This was not a problem. I paid €80.33 per night for 2 nights and registered as a member of the hotel chain's loyalty club to get an immediate 10% discount on my booking. Although I had no plans to return, I am now considering doing so next year as the hotel greatly exceeded my expectations and is close to the centre of Bayeux, and a large supermarket with a petrol station is a 2-3 minute drive away.
