3 reviewsCardiff Castle is an iconic heritage site situated in the heart of the city centre. This historic landmark offers a journey through two thousand years of history, from its origins as a Roman fort and Norman stronghold to its transformation into a Victorian Gothic palace. Visitors can explore the lavish apartments designed by William Burges, wander through the atmospheric wartime shelters located within the castle walls, and visit the Firing Line military museum. The castle also features a public square and green space where people can relax and enjoy the views of the Norman Keep.
Accessibility Highlights
The Visitor Centre is fully accessible for wheelchair users and includes a lift providing access to the first floor and the roof terrace. From the terrace, there is level access to the Battlement Walks and a ramp leading down to the flat castle grounds. Accessible toilets are located on the first floor of the Visitor Centre and within the Education Centre. While the historic apartments and Norman Keep have many steep steps and narrow staircases, an audio guide for visually impaired visitors and a British Sign Language tour for d/Deaf people are available. The Cardiff Mobility Buggy also offers a free service to assist visitors travelling between local car parks and the castle entrance.
