This site is currently closed. Cardoness was built in the 1400s by the notorious McCulloch family, as a demonstration of their status. The well-preserved prison shows the kind of reception their most unwelcome guests might expect.

Disabled Access at Cardoness Castle

Approach to site Cardoness Castle is at the top of a small but steep hill. It is reached up a steep concrete path with 33 steps. The path does not have handrails all the way up. There is a very steep ramp leading from the courtyard to the entrance of the castle. Visitor Centre The reception area has ramped access. Monument The castle has five upper levels. These are all reached by using a narrow (90cm) historic stone spiral staircase with 84 steps. The steps are uneven and there is no handrail. Light levels in the lower rooms and staircase of Cardoness can be very low.
