I am a disabled person. I have experience of challenges around: a hidden impairment and moving around.
Overall Rating
Good
The Central Pier tram stop is not only handy for the fun fair and shows on the pier, but is also right across from Madame Tussaud’s and Peter Rabbit Explore and Play. Sea Life and the Gruffalo & Friends Clubhouse are just 120 metres up the road. If you are coming from the attractions rather than from the seafront, consider where to cross the road, especially if you rely on tactile markings to cross the tracks.
Disabled Access In and Around
Good
The tram stop has two platforms with the tracks in between them. The platform on the side of the sea is for the northbound trams to Knott’s End Ferry and the platform on the side of the road is for the trams heading south to Starr Gate. Both platforms have shelters with a bench and a timetable. The benches do not have a backrest or armrests. Each platform has two wheelchair symbols on the ground that line up with the wider doors on the trams. The doors of the trams are approximately at the same level as the platforms, so there are no ramps needed. I always managed to get onto the tram in my powerchair, but I did find that it was a little bit higher than the platform and I struggled when it was raining and everything was slippery. The platforms are elevated from the street level, so there are slopes up on either side. The slopes and the edge of the platforms are indicated with tactile markings. There are lowered curbs on either side of the platform crossing the tracks, but only the northern one (the right one if looking towards the sea) has tactile markings. The pedestrian promenade connects to the northbound platform on both ends. There is a pedestrian crossing at the southern end of the platform with tactile markings, but there are no markings when crossing the tracks at that end. There is another pedestrian crossing and a crossing of the track with tactile markings about 50 metres north of the platforms, past the bus stop.
Accessible facilities: Single-level venue, Step-free entrance, Seating at regular intervals
Parking & Transport
Average
I travelled to this place by tram
There is some on-street parking in the streets off Promenade but at least 200 or 300 metres away. The closest car park is Bonny Street Car Park, about 130 metres away and the Central surface and multi-storey car parks just beyond. Brunswick Street bus stop (2, 11, 21, 68, 68C) is next to the tram stop.
Accessible Toilets
There are no toilets at this tram stop. There is a Changing Places toilet in Peter Rabbit Explore and Play across the road.
Staff
Good
I have found the tram staff to be friendly and helpful. Sometimes there will be staff at the tram stops, but more commonly there will be two conductors on the tram who can assist you with boarding and buying your tickets.
