A really positive first visit to The Coffee House in Burton. It was spacious and easy to navigate in my powerchair, with a well-equipped accessible toilet and helpful staff. The coffee was lovely, although the food was a little mixed. The only accessibility caution is the narrow ramp to the toilet, which needs care when coming back down in a powerchair. Overall, somewhere I’d happily visit again. ☕♿❤️

We visited the newly opened Coffee House in Burton for lunch, and because I use a folding powerchair, Rosie, my daughter and I decided to look at it properly from an accessibility point of view rather than simply checking whether it described itself as “wheelchair accessible”. ♿ Getting in & getting around First impressions were really good. The entrance is step-free, wide and easy to negotiate, and I could get Rosie through independently. Inside was one of the best parts. There was plenty of space between the tables, smooth flooring and enough room to manoeuvre Rosie without constantly worrying about clipping chairs or blocking everybody else. I could sit comfortably at a normal table without sticking out into an aisle, and other customers and staff could still pass. The counter was visible from seated height, and staff were happy to bring our order over to the table. They were helpful in a very natural way — no fuss, which I always appreciate. The café was also air-conditioned, the temperature was comfortable, and I found the lighting and noise levels manageable. 🚻 Accessible toilet The accessible toilet itself was impressive. It’s a genuinely spacious room with plenty of manoeuvring space, grab rails, a drop-down rail and an emergency pull cord that actually reaches the floor. 👏 There’s also a fold-away baby-changing unit, but it doesn’t obstruct the wheelchair space when it’s folded away. And, refreshingly, the accessible loo hadn’t become an unofficial storage cupboard! There is one important caveat for powerchair users. ⚠️ The route to the toilet involves a fairly narrow ramp. I managed it in Rosie, but coming back down I had to be quite careful because the chair could gather speed. It’s absolutely something I’d want another powerchair user to know before visiting. ☕ What we ate I had a latte and a slice of carrot cake. The latte was lovely, but unfortunately the carrot cake was quite dry. My daughter chose an iced vanilla latte and Hunters Chicken baguette. I tried her iced latte and thought it was nice, although she found it too bitter. She described the baguette as okay — perfectly edible, but not something she was raving about afterwards! Our total was £21 for two drinks, a cake and a baguette, which I thought was reasonable for a café lunch for two. 💚 Would I return? Yes. The food we tried was a little hit-and-miss, and I’d probably choose something other than the carrot cake next time, but I’d happily return for coffee. From an accessibility perspective, I was particularly impressed. I could enter independently, move around comfortably, sit properly at a table and use the accessible toilet without furniture having to be rearranged around me. The toilet ramp is the one thing powerchair users need to approach with care, particularly on the way back down, but overall this was a very positive experience using Rosie. And perhaps the best accessibility test of all: I didn’t spend the entire visit feeling as though my wheelchair was in everybody else’s way. That shouldn’t be remarkable — but wheelchair users will know exactly why it is. ♿❤️ Accessibility: Very good overall, with a caution for the toilet ramp. Coffee: ☕ Definitely again. Food: Mixed on this visit. Value: Reasonable. Would I return? Yes.
