Beautiful park with real effort to make accessible

Overall Rating

Good

Large park with tarmac paths, cafe, accessible play equipment and accessible toilets, including a Changing Places toilet. It is run by the Friends of Craigtoun and the organisation has clearly given thought to accessibility. Their website is very helpful.

Disabled Access In and Around

Good

Apparently the Friends have recently had tarmac laid and this certainly makes the park more accessible. We knew from the website that the cafe was not close to the car park. I am a slow wheelchair pusher nowadays and I would guess it took at least five minutes. Though the gradients are not steep they are present. More seats between the car park and the cafe would be helpful. The cafe has a button for an automatic door and there is plenty of room to move inside. The permanent ramp to the cafe was fine going up but coming down we had not realised the last foor or so was much steeper. This gave us both a real fright as I nearly tipped my relative out of the chair. I would strongly recommend that this part is highlighted with yellow paint. We visited the walled garden which has a paved path at the top and seats with backs and armrests. There is also a small peaceful garden behind the toilets although the seats were on the grass up a step. We did not have time to explore the rest of the park.

There is a vast car park so though it was quiet when we were there it must fill up when the paid attractions are open. The Blue Badge area is tarmac.

Accessible Toilets

Good

There are three accessible toilets. 1. In the cafe. Drop down rail and horizontal wall rail. No red cord. Baby change trolley prevents sideways transfer or an assistant getting close enough to help. 2. Toilet in grounds. Horizontal wall rail and drop down rail. 3. Changing Places toilet funded by a thoughtful legacy. Bench and hoist. On the downside the door is very heavy and the two drop down rails are unusually far apart. It needs a RADAR key which can be obtained from the Ticket Office, though this is only open when the paid attractions are in use.

Only staff were in cafe. Very helpful.

Additional Information

There are a number of paid attractions including a miniature railway and tractor rides. The website gives clear information about when these are open.
