Great day out and accessible boat ride!

We stayed overnight here in our motorhome and had a fantastic day exploring the Falkirk Wheel and the surrounding canal walks. We did the boat trip on the wheel and through Roughcastle Tunnel, which was better than I expected. The highlight though, was in the evening, watching the sun set behind the wheel and then seeing it all lit up.

    Visit to the Falkirk Wheel

We visited the. Falkirk Wheel with family, everything is fully accessible, although you do need to make sure you park in the right car park. There area a couple of car parks one is. A little way from the visitor centre going down by a narrow path near the canal. We parked in the car park next to the visitor centre which had quite a few blue badge spaces. Access from the car park is easy it’s all flat. The entrance to the visitor centre is also easy again all flat, and the centre, shop, and cafe are all easy too get around . Tables in the cafe well spaced apart meaning plenty of room for the wheelchair. A good choice of food on the menu . We had a hot drink and biscuits, the cakes did look very good. We booked a tour on the barge which takes you up on the wheel to the top canal. My carer was free and i paid a concession rate. Access to the barge is via a metal ramp which they put down for you. You do have to wait for all passengers to board first as the wheelchair place is by the doorway to get on the barge, there is a seat next to where the wheelchair goes for whoever is with you to sit. But this is only for one person. The trip takes about an hour to do and you are told all about how the wheel was made, how it works, what the canals were used for, and various points of interest you can see out of the windows. It’s a very enjoyable trip on the canal. You are also able to watch the wheel working either from inside the centre or cafe. And also go across the walkways by the lock to an area where they have crazy golf and activities for children. We would visit again when we have more family and friends to stay.

    The Falkirk Wheel

Parked into one of plenty disabled bays. Can also travel via bus. I'm a wheelchair user and ground was very smooth so getting about was easy. Getting checked in was fine with accessible toilets close by. Then have to wait outside the wheel itself to be picked up. Staff were great. Plenty of room for me as they had a specific area for me to go. The whole experience lasted about 20 minutes. Had a good time just not my cup of tea.
