At the end of May, I made it my mission to visit all 8 stations that serve the Greenock area. Fort Matilda is one such station. On arrival, I took some time to appreciate the station house. It's no longer used, but I enjoy seeing these structures as they're a throwback to years gone by. The ScotRail website advises: "This station has a degree of step-free access to the platform, which may be in both directions or in one direction only - please check details", a genuinely confusing description. Spoiler alert: only one platform has step-free access. The other requires you to climb some stairs and cross a bridge.

Platform 1, which provides services to Paisley and Glasgow, has step-free access to and is easy to locate from the car park, just go around the station building and you'll find it. On the platform, you'll find ticket machines and smartcard readers, though I prefer to buy my tickets online. There is also a rain shelter and a metal bench. To access platform 2, which provides services to Gourock, you need to cross a bridge, so this station is great for heading to Glasgow, but not coming back from it! The steps to the bridge have tactile paving at the top and bottom, painted stair nosings and handrails on either side. On platform 2, there is a plastic shelter with benches. On either platform, there is tactile paving at the edges, hearing loops, help points, assistance meeting points and overhead dot matrix signage. Audio announcements are also used.

I travelled to this place by personal vehicle
The station has 19 standard parking spaces and 2 accessible parking spaces. The two accessible parking spaces are poorly marked and are two long bays rather than bays with hatched markings around them. There is a designated drop-off point. The car park is compact, and a few people had parked in places they shouldn't have, which made it awkward to drive out of. There is a rather handy bus stop outside the car park on Newark Street.
