Overview

Our stay in Glen Nevis was so lovely I almost feel reluctant to let other people in on the secret! The accessible static caravan is in one of the best locations in the park, and it's so comfortable and spacious inside - no second best for disabled visitors here.

Transport & Parking

The Glen Nevis self-catering park is an easy drive from Fort William, and you can park by your caravan. There are buses too, with stops outside the park, but I didn't test their accessibility.

Access

Just the fact that someone has bothered to build ramp access up to the static caravan is a fantastic start, because a lot of the trouble with camping for people with impaired mobility is not being able to clamber up into campervans or get up from the floor of tents. But with this place you can stay in the caravan and come and go just like everyone else. Indeed, in some ways what you get is better than everyone else: one of the staff members told me he thought the accessible caravan is the nicest one on the park, because it's been adapted from a rather tightly-packed three-bedroom caravan to one with two bigger bedrooms and a bigger bathroom, so it's more spacious and comfortable for the visitors. Also, it's in a great location on the edge of the caravan park so the views from some of the windows are straight across the fields to the mountains. The bathroom has a loo with rails and a shower with a (non-wobbly) wheeled shower seat and hose you can hold. The kitchen was also reasonably spacious for a caravan, and I was able to do some washing up sitting sideways on my scooter. Almost every other building in the Glen Nevis Holidays complex was accessible too, including the neighbouring bar and restaurant and the supermarket in the campsite down the road. The only slight shame was that the laundry room on the self-catering park had a big step up to it so I couldn't go in. One more thing to recommend: there's a mile-long accessible path along the river opposite the self-catering park (cross the bridge near the youth hostel), so you can even get properly out into the countryside with your scooter or wheelchair. I was told that some previous visitors had even attempted some trickier paths by hiring off-road scooters from Shopmobility Lochaber in Fort William.

Everyone was very nice and helpful, right from when I originally phoned to book, and I particularly appreciated my chats with the groundsman Sandy, who told me about the accessible path along the river and passed on other useful information.
