Disabled Travellers Isle of Skye tour (part one) number 5, GLENCOE
Our journey continued through high roads and cutting through lovely mountain scenery, before we took a short break so as to hear the story of the Glencoe massacre of 1692.
The village of Glencoe itself stands on the spot of the massacre, with its memorial in the centre.

The village lies at the northern end of the glen, and a grim reminder of what evil, man can do to his fellow man. By May 1690, most of the Jacobite rising had mostly been controlled,
But money was short for future wars, so the Scottish government decided to offer £12,000 to the Jacobite tribes to encourage them to sign an oath of loyalty to William 111 and Mary 11, but the chiefs of the clans could not agree between each other, so by 1691, no one had taken the oath.
The then Secretary of State, Lord Stair decided to make an example of in particular the MacDonald clan, so on 13th February 1692, Scottish government forces were ordered to
attack the clan, and it is believed that 30 members of clan MacDonald and those who supported them, were killed.
The glen is known as “The weeping Glen” following this terrible incident.
