Overview
We visited Holkham Hall and the cafe and were very impressed with the forethought that had been put into accessibility and especially the staff on duty. Highly recommended!
Transport & Parking
We drove - there are several spaces available for blue badge users. Parking costs £6.
Access
We’re were incredibly impressed with the thought that had been put into accessibility and how proud the staff were about this. From the parking space there is a slight sloped path to the visitors centre which is near the cafe and Holkham Stories. At the visitors centre there are a small number of motorised scooters available if needed - these would be handy for anyone wanting to see more of the grounds. There is a flat path to the Hall and then a ramp up to the main building. Once in the Hall the main exhibitions are on the first floor which is accessed via the marble stairs which n the reception area. For those in a wheelchair there is a stair climbing machine which can take manual wheelchairs upstairs. Just to save time my husband transferred into their wheelchair and used that on the first floor until we came downstairs again. From here the first floor is accessible in a wheelchair. There are lots of rugs and some had plastic covers on the edges which made it easy to onto. Where there wasn’t a plastic cover we did at times drag the edge of the rug with the wheelchair - but on every occasion rather than panic staff nearby helped out where needed and told us not to worry. Heading back downstairs via the stairs climbing machine again we used our own chair to explore the kitchen. The cafe and Holkham Stories are also accessible, and we saw a sign for an accessible tractor tour of the grounds which we skipped due to being a little cold but will definitely try next times. There is also a walled garden which we didn’t visit this time but were advised to drive to and park n one of the blue badge spaces if we did - they also had a number of scooters available.
Toilets
Large, clean and accessible the only issue is a common one in that the alarm cord is very near the toilet and got in the way a little. Anyone transferring onto the toilet would have to take care not to pull it by accident.
Staff
Absolutely the best staff we have encountered - both in terms of support where needed but also in their knowledge of the artwork and building.
Anything else you wish to tell us?
The food in the cafe was excellent and very generous. If you try nothing else have a sausage roll - trust us on this one.
