Highland Flings, friends and Fun
This is a brilliant experience for anyone wanting a taste of Highland culture and hospitality; it's also a great place to meet friends (old and new ). I need to tell you first that I attended the Games while also helping out at a Euan's Guide stall so I only saw some of the event but what I did see, I really enjoyed.
We loved speaking to so many people from all across the world; it was lovely to make lots of cultural connections and spread the word about Euan's Guide, not to mention the general great craic. Inbetween manning the stall, we managed to catch some hammer throwing and tossing the caber (which were big hits with the crowd ) as well as the solo piper’s competition and the tail end of a ceilidh complete with songs of Robert Burns; everyone was stomping their feet to the fiddling beat!
Although I never went in, I saw that there was also a children's area which looked very popular and lots of food stalls were available too offering different dietary options. We arrived at Bught Park in my powerchair but both permanent and temporary disabled parking was available on site.
Despite being located in a field, I had no problem with accessing the event, I was apprehensive about the mud due to the downpours the night before but I didn't have any issues in my power chair. I did have to slow down for the occasional bump outside the marquees but on the whole, I managed without a problem.
I also had a good view of the Games despite the crowds although this may change depending on the size of the crowd. I believe there is a viewing platform . The only thing that let the accessibility down was the disabled toilets which were pretty basic with grab rails but quite limited space to manoeuvre, no red cord and the hand sanitiser and toilet roll was completely unreachable for most disabled people without a P. A.
Staff were great; we were greeted by a member of staff who directed us to the nearest entrance, once there, another lovely staff member moved the queue gate out of my way making it much easier for me to get through.
I would definitely recommend the Games – it's the people that make it special.
