Weather was disappointing, wet, and very misty, but bear in mind the Island is known as”The Misty Isle”
Our map shows the route from Glenelg and KYLERHEA, and a pleasant enough trip.
The island map shows that Skye is rather a funny shape, long, but with protruding areas, with mostly green fields that rise high on the mountainsides, and as the climate here is mild, it makes it wet and windy. The flora has large areas of heather
moors, and wonderful mountain scenery, but these views are often hidden by low clouds and mist, which is a shame, but it never stops you admiring the beautiful island and all that it can offer.
A translation of the Norse name for the island, Eileen a’Cheo means “island of the mist” a rather poetic Gaelic name, which shows that throughout its history, the mist has dominated the island.
A beautiful and very popular area is that of the Cuillin mountains, the Red Cuillin hills are mainly granite, and have more rounded hills.
the Black Cuillin consists of mainly Basalt and Gabbro, and it actually has 12 Munro mountains, which makes it a great pull for walkers, as many try to climb as many Munro as possible, trying for the “Munro Bagging” contest.
During June-July of 2023, one such effort was reported on a lady, Jamie Aarons from Canada, who Climbed all the known 282 Munro,s of Scotland, which meant she ascended 140,000m in 31 days, 10 hours and 27 minutes, doing it all for charity. She beat the old record of a local Skye resident by about 4 hours.
The Munro,s are mountains that have a height of at least 3000 feet (914.4m). The best known in Scotland is of course Ben Nevis.
The highest on Skye is Scurr Alasdair, which is the tallest of them all. These Munro mountains are so named after Sir Hugo Munro, 4th Baronet (1856-1919) who in 1891 produced a list of all such known high mountains on his Munro Table.
The rainfall can be high, with south-westerly winds, Broadford is regarded as the wettest area.
Gaelic was still the main spoken language right up until 1921.
Nowadays there are still about 100 or so Crofters who can still make a living on the island.
But it’s the visitors who still help the economy here, with 650,000 visitors bringing in £211 million pounds in 2019.
However, these visitors has caused problems, islanders complaining about overcrowding due to these visitors, parking can be a real problem in the main season, so chose your visit carefully.
