Turkish restaurant with great food and good accessibility

Visit date:

Just had lunch at the brand new restaurant Kukina. It was absolutely lovely. They do Turkish flatbreads, Gozlene, with lots of savoury or sweet options. There are vegetarian choices (though not vegan unfortunately) and mine came with salad and this really tasty lemon-sweet-balsamic drizzle. It was hot off the bread-making plate that they have set in the window so you can see them making it fresh, which is a neat touch. The setting was warm and inviting, and had a beautiful olive tree in the centre. The noise level was low (it was quiet when i visited, but there are lot of walls and corners that i think would offer fairly good noise neutralizing), with music playing in the background. Also, most impressively, they have a well set out disabled access bathroom. There is a step to get in, but the staff were super friendly and helpful, and i think they would be delighted to hold a door or help out if needed. The lighting is naked lightbulbs, that glow a fierce orange. This might not be ideal for some people. Other than that, I highly recommend checking it out. Great food, lovely atmosphere and varied menu.

Transport & Parking

No parking available, but on several bus routes, which stops and traffic light crossings very near by. It is on Leith walk, which is a long hill, so the incline might have to be taken into consideration if going up and down hills can be a challenge.

There is one step to get in, but inside the layout is suitable for a large wheelchair to get through, with chairs and tables I think could be moved to accommodate someone's easy access. The tables are solid, and high, and i think would easily fit a person's legs under them. It is all on one floor. The menu was offered in writing, but as the menu features Turkish foods, the waiting staff were very happy to talk through what all the options meant.

The disabled access bathroom is large with plenty of space, and well through out handrails and easy turn level taps. The door was a bit heavy to push open, but had a lever handle. The lock was a large twist lock.

Very friendly and welcoming. They seemed keen to help.

It would've been good know how big step was to get in.
