    About

Lauriston Castle, is an enchanting Castle by the sea in North Edinburgh. When you step inside Lauriston Castle, you see it just as it was in 1926, when it was left to the nation by the last private owner, Mrs Reid. We have a team of costumed performers who interpret the Castle in a vatriety of ways. The Castle and the collections it contains is one of Scotland’s greatest gifts. Collections include, Italian Furniture, Sheffield Plate, Crossley Wool Mosaics and Blue John ornaments. The interiors of the house are the work of Mrs Reid's husband, Mr W R Reid, the owner of Morison & Co., a leading Edinburgh cabinet making business. The beautiful grounds were laid out by William Henry Playfair in the 1840s. Much of the planting dates to this period. The award-winning Japanese Friendship garden, gifted by the prefecture of Kyoto, is a tranquil place to contemplate.

A relaxing, beautiful & peaceful garden to visit

This review is of the grounds, gardens and cafe at Lauriston Castle. The Castle and its separate toilet building are not currently open due to Covid restrictions - but the cafe and outside seating areas are. The grounds are lovely to explore with the trees and plants offering a beautiful autumn display, set against views of the Castle and the Forth estuary. The cafe is run by Mimi’s Bakery with two outside seating areas. One area is dog friendly and fully accessible. The courtyard seating area is also accessible but no dogs allowed. There are now two marked disabled parking bays in the car park at the entrance. A wide, well surfaced path/road leads from the car park to the Castle and cafe. The quality and surfacing of paths vary throughout the grounds though and can also be quite muddy in autumn!

Amazing grounds could be enhanced for people with mobility impairments

The grounds are extensive and enjoy a beautiful setting with magnificent views of the Forth coast. There is an accessible toilet but the path to get there can be a challenge.

    Fantastic views

The castle is not accessible for wheelchair users but the grounds are fairly good.
