Monifieth Library is a small but practical space that sits within the MAC, the Monifieth Activity Centre. It feels welcoming as soon as you enter and even though it is not a large library it does what it sets out to do very well. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get around. Despite its compact layout there was more than enough space for me to move comfortably in my wheelchair.

Disabled Access In and Around

There is a gentle slope at the entrance and a few benches outside along with water bowls for dogs. The double doors open outwards and can be operated with a touch pad. When you come into the building the library is on the right. It has an open plan layout so there are no doors to get through. I had plenty of space to move about in my wheelchair. The reception counter is fairly low and there are seats nearby for anyone who prefers to sit while talking to staff. Public computers are also available. I did not notice a hearing loop although I am aware that the library provides a hearing aid battery service. There are no alternative formats in use.. The library also offers support for people who find digital or telephone communication difficult or who need help completing Blue Badge applications, housing paperwork or bus pass forms.

There are three accessible parking spaces at the side of the venue. The car park is gravel, but these bays have concrete underneath. I like that this has been considered, though the gravel across the rest of the car park might still make things tricky for some disabled people who could otherwise manage with a standard space. A short distance from the entrance, on the Marine Drive side of the building, there are four more accessible bays and eight EV charging spots with CHAdeMO 51 kW, CCS 51 kW and Type 2 22 kW options. The chargers sit up on the kerb and are blocked by bollards, something to keep in mind I don’t think Marine Drive is maintained by the MAC, but the info might be helpful. Just be aware that you need to go onto the road to reach the dropped kerb. My score doesn’t reflect this.

Accessible Toilets

The library has its own accessible toilet although I did not use it. There are also two other accessible toilets and a Changing Places toilet to the left of the reception desk, which I did visit. I used one of these accessible toilets and found it spacious enough for a powerchair user and a few other people. It does not need a RADAR key. The door opens beside the toilet pan so you need to close it before you can reach the transfer space. It is not a major problem but it does mean a little reshuffling. There is a single blue grab rail on the left side of the toilet, which appears on your right when seated. It stands out clearly against the white wall. The sink has a small basin, a lever mixer tap and blue rails on either side. Paper towels and sanitary products are mounted on the wall to the left. This toilet also includes a baby change table. I have reviewed the Changing Places toilet in a separate review.
