A sparkling clean Changing Places toilet

Good

Opened in 2024, this public facility is pretty much brand new. It offers many of the features one would expect. The toilet is located at the MAC Monifieth Activity Centre, which sits right on the beachfront beside the Blue Seaway play park. The MAC is a busy spot for locals and visitors, and is home to a café with scenic views, a small library and fitness suite which hosts everything from classes to weddings. It is a handy stop if you are spending time on the beach, heading along the coastal path to Broughty Ferry or just need to use the loo!

Disabled Access In and Around

Good

There is a short incline at the entrance, with benches and water bowls for dogs. The double doors open outwards and are activated by a touch pad. On the left, you will find the café, and just beyond the reception desk is the route to the fitness suite, accessible toilets and the Changing Places toilet.

I travelled to this place by walk or wheel

There are three accessible parking spaces at the side of the venue. The car park is gravel, but these bays have concrete underneath. I like that this has been considered, though the gravel across the rest of the car park might still make things tricky for some disabled people who could otherwise manage with a standard space. A short distance from the entrance, on the Marine Drive side of the building, there are four more accessible bays and eight EV charging spots with CHAdeMO 51 kW, CCS 51 kW and Type 2 22 kW options. The chargers sit up on the kerb and are blocked by bollards, something to keep in mind I don’t think Marine Drive is maintained by the MAC, but the info might be helpful. Just be aware that you need to go onto the road to reach the dropped kerb. My score doesn’t reflect this.

Accessible Toilets

Good

There are two accessible toilets here as well as a Changing Places toilet. Since this review focuses on the Changing Places toilet, I will cover the others separately. You will need a RADAR key to unlock the inward opening door. The main entrance to the MAC has automatic doors, but the door into the corridor for the Changing Places toilet is manual. Inside, you will find a spacious and well equipped loo. There is a ceiling track hoist, a height adjustable changing bed with a shower, a baby change table and a separate shower. The sink is height adjustable with a long lever tap, a large mirror and a contrasting grabrail on the right. The toilet pan has a contrasting seat and grabrails. The red cord hangs freely to the right when seated, and there is a colostomy shelf to the left. The room is huge, so there is plenty of space for anyone who needs support or extra companions. It has wet room style flooring and white walls, which contrast well against the rails.

I spoke to the reception staff and they were very pleasant. They also took a ten Euan’s Guide Red Cord Cards from me in case those installed in the loo needed refreshed.
