Overview

Melrose Abbey is a magnificent ruin. It is where Robert the Bruce's heart was buried. At present the abbey church is closed to the public while work is undertaken on the structure. However, visitors can go into grounds. This was a very special visit to see the grave of my 2nd great great uncle and aunt, so apologies that there are so few photos.

Transport & Parking

The nearest train station is Tweedbank. There are regular local buses that go to Melrose. We drove and parked in the street nearby.

Access

3

There is a visitors' shop which has a ramp. We walked through the lawn to the far end of the cemetery to find the grave we were looking for. There was a short but steep slope we had to go up.

Toilets

0

There are no accessible toilet in the grounds, but there is a public accessible toilet close by in the town centre.

Staff

Staff were extremely helpful. When we explained that we had come to visit a family grave they asked the name and were able to locate the grave number on the name. This made it so easy to find. We had free admission as we were visiting a family grave and it was recorded in a book.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

It was so moving to find the grave I forgot to take access type photo on my visit. It is a beautiful building and location. Melrose is a very pretty town too, so well worth a visit.
