Overview

I had a really great time at Mikaku! The food was lovely. A lot of items were crossed off the menu, which was a surprise at first, but the staff explained they were waiting for new menus to arrive. They offer a “half ramen” option, which is brilliant if you prefer smaller portions or want to try a few sides alongside your main. They also had a special dumpling menu that changes daily, with one or two options, and you could tell they were handmade, which isn’t something you find everywhere. A really nice touch that makes me want to go back. It's a nice, modern place and noise levels weren't too loud.

Transport & Parking

3.5

As it’s located in the city centre, I’m not sure how easy parking would be, especially for Blue Badge holders. However, there are great public transport options nearby. There are plenty of buses, and Queen Street Station is just down the road, so it’s easy to reach without a car.

Access

Access here is good overall. While there’s seating upstairs, there’s also space available downstairs, which is where we were seated. The venue doesn’t answer the phone, which can be stressful if you want to confirm access arrangements in advance. We left a note in the special requests section when booking, but it would have been reassuring to see clearer access information on the website. As it stands, the only slivers of information I could find online were mentions that there are stairs and some high tables; no confirmation that ground-floor standard height seating is available. Thankfully, I was with someone who had been before and told me that there would be some suitable tables for us to sit at.

Toilets

There is an accessible toilet. The lock is positioned a little high, but I managed it. The space itself is well-lit, with a toilet and sink at a good height. It was spacious enough for me, although getting to it means navigating between tables and staff collecting drinks at the bar, it’s a bit tight but manageable.

Staff

4.5

Staff were friendly and helpful. They initially let us know we had the table until 7 and would have to leave come 7, but when the time came, they told us we were fine to stay longer. We were ready to go, but the heads-up was appreciated. One member of staff noticed I might need help and gave me a hand with the bathroom door; not something they did throughout the visit, but it was thoughtful and didn’t go unnoticed.
