Overall Rating
Good
Montrose Sports Centre is a fantastic, well-equipped fitness hub complete with a swimming pool and accessible equipment. More importantly, it happens to be staffed by some of the loveliest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting, who were eager to show me around and listen to feedback. If I didn't live 123 miles away, I might just get myself a membership.
Disabled Access In and Around
Good
There are automatic doors at the entrance and smooth tiled flooring in the main foyer. The front desk features a hearing loop and a lowered counter, as does the café area. The café has plenty of tables and chairs, all small square tables rather than booths or benches. Navigational signage is generally good, although I was also guided through the building by a member of staff. The flooring alters depending on where you are in the building, with workout areas featuring rubber tiled floors, squash courts having polished wooden flooring and a change to tiles in the pool area. The changing area for the pool has a accessible changing cubicles and lockers with knee clearance for wheelchair users. At the pool you will find a pool hoist, which is always a joy to see. The lifts in the building are large enough for most powerchairs, though you may need to reverse out. The lift buttons also feature raised numbers and braille.
Accessible facilities: Lift to all areas, Step-free entrance, Seating at regular intervals
Parking & Transport
Good
I travelled to this place by walk or wheel
Right at the entrance, you'll find six accessible parking spaces, all featuring hatched markings to the rear and on both sides of the vehicle. These are bordered by two parent and child spaces, as well as two electric vehicle charging bays. While I’ve reviewed the EV facilities separately, but the offering here is pretty poor with two two standard-sized bays. If you're coming by public transport, the 52 bus runs right by Marine Avenue, outside the centre. Montrose Railway Station is just over half a mile away.
Accessible facilities: Electric Vehicle Charging, Drop-off or pick up point
Accessible Toilets
Good
The accessible toilet and Changing Places toilet require a RADAR key for access. I found the facilities were clean and the transfer spaces were kept clear, which is always good to see. Most accessible toilets throughout the building have a small basin sink and long, lever-operated taps. Every accessible toilet has contrasting toilet seats and grabrails, with plenty of room to move around. The accessible shower areas feature grabrails, a shower seat and a lever-style tap. The Changing Places toilet features an adjustable change bed, a shower, a ceiling track hoist and a slip-resistant floor.
Facilities: Accessible toilet, Changing Places toilet
Staff
Excellent
The staff were extremely friendly, offering me a tour of the building when I explained the nature of my visit.
Additional Information
The venue is a fantastic example of promoting inclusion at sports facilities, and puts many others in Scotland to shame.
