Overview
I attended a work event at the Motability Operations office, where they offered a tour of the building, including the Changing Places toilet, which you can book to use if you're in the local area! Due to where it's located, I expected it to be of a high standard, and it definitely is!
Transport & Parking
There are 11 accessible parking spaces in the car park just outside, three of which also have EV charging facilities. These bays are located under a canopy, and there’s no shortage of standard parking spaces nearby. A convenient bus stop can be found on South Gyle Broadway, just over 300 metres away, with services 21, 22, N22 and X22 operating from there. The nearest train station is South Gyle, located half a mile away.
Access
There is level access from the car park, through the automatic door and an extra-wide turnstyle for mobility devices. The toilet can be found if you follow the path through the café, through the door to the right.
Toilets
The Changing Places toilet is fantastic, in fact, it's almost perfect - it even has a feature I’ve not come across anywhere else. The door opens using a wall sensor on the right and swings outwards. Inside, plenty of space to accommodate the largest of mobility devices. The room includes a ceiling track hoist, an adjustable changing bed, and a shower. The sink is height-adjustable with a deep basin and a sensor-activated tap. The toilet itself has space for both right- and left-side transfers. There’s a shelf and red emergency cord to the right when seated, and the hoist can be positioned over the toilet too. The rails on either side are height-adjustable, which is pretty unique — you can raise or lower them independently to suit different users. And as if that isn't enough, there’s even a remote-controlled bidet that helps users feel extra fresh! The only real downside is that the toilet paper was on a shelf behind the toilet instead of on the holder attached to the left-hand rail. The flush can be found on top of the toilet.
Staff
The reception staff were lovely and explained that this facility is open to anyone who needs to use it and can be reserved by emailing Edin.reservations@motabilityoperations.co.uk.
