Venue Description

Here at the Museum of Oxford (MOX), we have undergone a significant redevelopment, restoring the Victorian grandeur of the building and reimagining how we tell this city’s fascinating tales. We have two new galleries which show the changing story of Oxford through its history and people. From football to fairgrounds, marmalade to Morris Motors, patron saints to pubs, barges, bones, and all types of quirky customs—there’s something for everyone. A new space, called Museum Makers, encourages school children and communities to engage with our learning programme in a fun, informal space. Through collection items, video, audio, and interactive displays, the exhibitions uncover what makes Oxford such a special place to live, work and study. It’s a great place for locals to explore their community stories and for visitors to discover our amazing city. Beyond the building, we host community-curated exhibitions, a variety of events ranging from live music to comedy, family activities and fun throughout the year and an accessible and extensive community programme. There are also lots of ways to get involved with the Museum through volunteering. Opening hours: Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm, free entry.

Accessibility

There is a ramped/sloped access at the entrance of the Town Hall and an intercom (102cm high). Members of the public must use the intercom to speak to a member of staff so that they can open the second set of doors. There is a third set of doors that open automatically towards you via a push pad which allow you to go down the corridor to reception. Inside the Museum there is a platform lift to access a small level change in the first gallery. There is also a lift to take visitors down to the Museum Makers and Learning Studio.
