Overview

Nancy Mulligan's Bar & Kitchen is, as Glaswegians would say, a "Celtic Shoap" – that is to say, a bar that may be frequented by fans of Glasgow's Green and White, with memorabilia on the walls to attest to it. However, it’s welcoming regardless of which football team you support. Directly across the road from the Ibis, it's a decent local pub to stop in if you'd rather have something a bit more Irish than the hotel's food offering or just fancy stopping in an authentic Irish pub.

Transport & Parking

3.5

On-street parking is available on either side of the building, either on King Street or Marquis Street, although I didn't spot any accessible parking spaces. If you'd prefer to hop on a bus, the 10A, 10B, 10H, 10J, 10K, 10M, 10P, 10X, 532, 532A, U1 and U2 all stop across the street, which is nothing short of impressive. The closest rail links are half a mile away at the brand-new, all-singing, all-dancing Belfast Grand Central Station, where you'll also find there are no shortage of coaches.

Access

3

There are two manual doors at the entrance, which are wide enough for a wheelchair user to get through. A patron helped open the door for me, however. When leaving, I had to push against the door to open it, but I was quickly assisted by bar staff. There's level access to the building from the street, from which you can see all areas of the pub. The bar is on your left upon entering, but there is no lowered section, so you might find yourself shouting over the noise to order. As I was travelling alone and the bar was busy, I used one of the free-standing barrel tables to rest my food on. If it were less busy, I'd have opted for a table. The signage for the accessible toilet is clear, which I always appreciate, even if the toilet isn't especially pleasant.

Toilets

2.5

The toilet serves its function but is not particularly secure or safe. I had no trouble opening the light wooden door, which opens inwards, but the lock was pretty much decorative. It's a sliding bolt with nothing to anchor the bolt to the wall, so sliding it closed is more a personal choice than any measure of security. The walls have beige tiles, against which the dull yellow and white grab rails barely contrast. The toilet is on the back wall and has grab rails on either side, but the backrest is a wooden box. There is room for a left-side transfer, and the red cord is on the left when seated. The cord has been cut short, stopping at the first bangle, making it useless if you fall to the floor. The sink has a single grab rail on the left and features a lever-style tap and a wall-mounted soap dispenser. The hand dryer is to the right but is placed comically high. If you're a wheelchair user, you'll need to stretch. There is no Braille signage inside the toilet.

Staff

The staff were exceptionally helpful, happy to bring my food to my table, and did all they could to look after me.
