    About

Welcome We are the gateway to Northumberland's coastline. Discover life in a historic fishing village. Discover the Mary Joicey all weather lifeboat and the Girl Anne fishing coble. Visit the 65 seat Breakwater Café serving local food and overlooking the bay. We are an all weather attraction, open all year. We can provide space for business, functions or groups in our Latimer Function Room. Car & coach park and bus terminus adjacent to the site. We have the longest promenade in Northumberland, an adjacent children's playpark and a sandy beach with rock pools. St. Bartholomew's Church is adjacent to the Centre and the UK's oldest operational lifeboat station is close by. Sean Henry's offshore sculpture "Couple" is in the bay and birdwatching, golf, fishing, sailing and other watersports are available nearby. We have regular events and a strong community engagement programme through education and outreach. We provide Hippocampe and Freedom Trax beach wheelchairs for free hire to enable accessibility to the large bay.

    An amazing find.

I arrived on a cold, wet day and was able to park very close to the promenade. The whole building is 100% accessible for everyone even those in a mobility scooter. The cafe has an amazing view across the bay and tables are well spaced for wheelchair users. The toilet facilities are immaculate and there is a full sized changing table and hoist if required. I visited the exhibition of the Maritime history of the area and was able to use the wheelchair lift to the second level and appreciate the huge RNLI lifeboat. A perfect place to visit whatever the weather.

Accessible toilet with hoist and Wheelchairs that work on sand

Very accessible car park and cafe as described in other reviews. The staff are really helpful and supportive. The accessible toilet has an adult changing bed and a portable hoist (you need your own sling) plus plenty of room for two support assistants if needed as well as the usual equipment. They have three beach 'Hippocampe' wheelchairs to hire (free but best to book). These are three different sizes so suitable for small children, teens and adult.

A cafe, shop, and museum that welcomes disabled people (wheelchair users)

The Northumberland coast is beautiful and this coastal town is a hidden gem with so much history. The modern Maritime Centre is situated on the promenade with a car park adjacent. Whether the weather is warm and sunny or cool and breezy the large windows of the Maritime Centre offer a great view of the bay. The food and service in the cafe is good, the toilets are great and the museum is interesting (for a very small charge). They currently offer free use of special wheelchairs suitable for the beach (they looked amazing) - it might be worth phoning ahead to check on availability.
