Venue Description

Discover 1,000 years of Oxford’s history! Oxford Castle & Prison is a visitor attraction with a past stretching far beyond your imagination. For hundreds of years the site has held both famous and infamous residents, serving time as a religious site, a home for royalty, a centre of justice and as the County Gaol. Led by a costumed character guide, the rich history of the castle will be revealed as you: climb the Saxon St George’s Tower, descend deep underground into the Crypt, explore the Prison D-Wing and scale the Mound of the 11th century motte-and-bailey castle!

Accessibility

Entrance - wheelchair ramp to shop and admissions area. Level access to the café and Key Learning Centre entrance. Lifts - there are platform lifts with tactile and braille controls and voice announcements that give access to the Key Learning Centre and to the crypt and both floors of the prison wing. Due to the historic nature of the site some areas are not accessible by wheelchair. St George's tower is only accessible by a 101 step spiral staircase, the Castle Mound has some steep steps and gradients and the doorways to the ground floor prison cells are 620-640mm wide.

Toilets

All toilets are located in the café. There is one accessible toilet with step free access, grab rails, easy turn locks and taps and emergency call alarms.

All staff are 'World Host' trained and are friendly and helpful.
