Overview

This was a really lovely, local, independent bookshop located in Hackney. The shop seemed to have a brilliant range of books on offer. In the centre of the shop was a seasonal display which they keep updated and this had a really good selection of books when I visited too. The staff member there on the day was really friendly and helpful. I was left to browse by myself when I wanted to and she was very happy to help me when I talked about books with her. There was also a “Pay it Forward” scheme being used, which I loved. It’s a scheme that everyone can contribute to. You can add as much as you want to the cost of what you’re buying that day. You then are given a slip with the amount you’ve contributed and can add it onto the board. Those that need the support are then able to come in and use the slips that are posted on the board to help cover the cost of their purchases.

Transport & Parking

The best way to get here is via a bus. The following buses all stop within a short distance of the shop’s entrance:38, 55, 106, 242, 253, 254, 425, 488, N38, N55, N253. There are three overground stations that are all around 960 metres away from the shop. These are: Hackney Central, Hackney Downs and Clapton. Homerton Overground station is also 1 mile away from the shop.

Access

The front door was a little heavy and there was also a bit of a lip to get inside. The combination made it slightly tricky to get in alone in my wheelchair. But, the staff member was happy to come and hold the door open for me which made it really easy to get in and out. The browsing areas were a bit narrow in some places but I was able to roll between the shelves and look at what was available. There is also a downstairs section which I wasn’t able to access but I was able to browse plenty on the main floor. It seemed downstairs was mainly non-fiction, which isn’t my favourite anyway!

The staff member was really friendly and helpful. Offered to recommend and suggest books to me and also happy to help me if I needed any assistance reaching things or with the door. She was really lovely and although it’s a little further afield for me, she definitely made me want to go back to support the shop.
