Overall Rating
Excellent
The design of the Peace Gardens had walls around the outside of it meaning I turned a corner and was blown away by the stunning landscaping and water features. Around the outside of the area were some large water features. These had steps which had gradient blue steps coming down to a small tiled canal. Large metal sculptures poured water down these steps which flowed down the small canals towards the centre of the garden. There are a few of these around the outside of the garden and then in the centre was a water display with water jets coming out of the floor. Between all the pathways are beautiful green, grass areas and around the edge, between the water features, are areas of beautiful greenery with a whole array of different types of trees and plants. There were lots of benches throughout the area and the whole space felt incredibly peaceful as the sound of the water provided a lovely backdrop to the scenery.
Disabled Access In and Around
Good
There was a step-free entrance to the garden by Millennium Square and buildings such as the Winter Garden and the Mercure Hotel. There were three different sets of stairs that also gave access in and out of the garden, they had grab rails up the centre of the stairs. There was also a large ramp on the opposite side of the other step-free entrance which came up alongside the Town Hall. The paving and flooring throughout the garden was really smooth. There were tactile markers before any of the stairs started and grab rails at each set of stairs and on the ramp. There were a large number of benches throughout the entire garden. There was also the option to sit on the concrete walls alongside some of the water features. Although I visited during the day, there seemed to be lots of lighting including traditional street lamps and spotlights installed in the walls along each of the pathways.
Accessible facilities: Single-level venue, Step-free entrance, Seating at regular intervals, Step-free access to most areas
Parking & Transport
Average
I travelled to this place by walk or wheel
The City Hall tram stop is roughly 350 metres away from the Peace Gardens. From this stop, you can access trams on the blue and yellow services. The yellow services travel between Middlewood and Meadowhall. The blue services travel between Malin Bridge and Halfway. The closest bus stops are located on Arundel Gate which is about 400 metres away. There are a large number of stops located on both sides of Arundel Gate but the ones closest to the Peace Gardens and the buses available from them are: Arundel Gate (AG10): 20, 24, 25, 43, 44 and X17 gold Charles Street (CS4): 24, 25, 120, 120k, 252 and SC2 Charles Street (CS3): 30, 30a, 52, 52a, 95, 95s, X1, X2, X6, X7 and X30. The gardens are located in a mainly pedestrianised area so there aren’t many good options for parking or drop-off.
Accessible Toilets
There were no toilets in the garden itself but the Town Hall does have accessible toilets available to use and it's located just behind the garden.
Staff
There were no staff members at this garden.
