We visited Robins in Oakthorpe with my folding powerchair (Rosie) to see how accessible it really is — not just whether you can technically get through the door! 🚗 Parking & arrival 🅿️ There is accessible/Blue Badge parking close to the building, so there isn’t far to travel from the car. ♿ The route from the parking area to the entrance was straightforward and the surface was manageable in my powerchair, without difficult slopes, cobbles or awkward kerbs. 🚪 Getting inside ✅ Step-free entrance ✅ Wide enough for a powerchair ✅ Enough room to get Rosie through Getting into Robins itself was straightforward in my powerchair. ☕ Café & getting around inside 🟢 The flooring is smooth and easy to travel over. 🟢 The counter is visible and accessible from seated height, and staff were happy to bring food and drinks over to the table. 🟠 The biggest difficulty inside is space. The café tables are quite close together and there isn’t a great deal of manoeuvring room for a powerchair. I did feel a little “in the way” at times, particularly because there wasn’t always enough room for people to pass comfortably once my chair was beside a table. 🌡️ The temperature was comfortable and there was air-conditioning, which was a definite plus. 💡 We found the lighting comfortable and the general noise level manageable too. 🚻 Accessible toilet 🔴 There is no accessible toilet. This was the biggest accessibility drawback for us and would make a difference to how long I could comfortably stay. 📋 Ordering, food & staff 📖 The menu was easy to read. 🥗 Dietary requirements were catered for. 🙋 Staff were helpful and happy to assist where needed, including bringing food and drinks to the table. ⭐ Our overall experience Robins does quite well with the basics of physical access — accessible parking, a straightforward route to the building and step-free entry. However, getting through the door and actually being able to use a venue comfortably are two different things. 🟢 Great: Parking, step-free access, smooth flooring, helpful staff, air-conditioning. 🟠 Could be better: More space between the café tables would make a big difference for wheelchair users. 🔴 Biggest issue: No accessible toilet. ♿ Would I visit again? Yes, particularly for a shorter visit and preferably at a quieter time when there is more room to manoeuvre.
