Root Down

Root Down has one step up into the shop (19.5cm) and the doorway in is 104cm. They have a ramp with a 1:8 incline, suitable for manual wheelchairs. There is a doorbell at the front door at wheelchair user height, to attract the attention of the shop keeper when the shopper can’t go in. They have made a lot of effort to make the inside of the shop as accessible as it will allow, with a hearing loop and grabbers for items on higher shelves. The shop is very small, however, and one of the isles is not wide enough for a chair or buggy. Some shelf edges and thresholds have contrast visibility. Harry (shopkeeper) has a wonderful attitude and regularly serves me on the street to save me asking for the ramp - though he’s more than happy to get it out if I want to come in to shop. I love buying their sourdough bread and local fresh produce. They do have a staff toilet and are happy for desperate people to use it!
