Possibly the worst campsite we've ever stayed on

Overview

Unfortunately, this is the only campsite on the Isle of Bute, and the lack of competition might explain why it is so bad. They can't help the fact that the site is built into a hill but the paths and roads around the site are bad enough for vehicles, never mind wheelchairs. I struggled even in my mountain trike.

Transport & Parking

4

The campsite is at the top of Canada Hill and, to be fair to the site, they issue warnings not to approach via The Serpentine. So we came in by the golf course as advised. This route is fine, though still quite steep and narrow. There are 3 gates to the holiday park. We arrived at gate 3 and wondered at first if we'd come to the wrong place because it looked like a building site. But no, we were correct.

Access

0.5

I found it extremely difficult to get around this site, even with a good quality off-road wheelchair. To get to the accessible toilets and shower room, I had to go down a steep hill on loose gravel and then leave the site, travel along a narrow road (fortunately not busy) to gate 1 and then back in again. The facilities block would have been impossible with my normal wheelchair due to poor surfacing around it and a step up to the ramp. There was also a step to get into the laundry.

Toilets

1.5

The accessible toilet and shower are at the end of the unisex block and were a reasonable size. I used the toilet couple of times, whilst waiting for laundry, but didn't fancy the shower at all. The building didn't look finished. It was all breeze blocks and even the floor was just concrete.

Staff

0.5

I didn't meet any staff. My husband checked us in and that was the last we saw of anybody. The café was open between 12 and 4 pm, but we went out for the day and by the time we got back, at 4:30, there was not a soul in sight.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

The site wasn't unclean but certainly unkempt. Some of the static caravans looked positively derelict. If it was a cheap/small farm site, with no facilities and a pricetag to match, it would have sort of been okay. We generally can use our own facilities. However, we chose this site because it had laundry and shower facilities and paid £26 per night, which really wasn't worth it.
