Venue Description

Royal Exhcange Theatre's vision is to be an internationally recognised centre of excellence for theatre in the UK and a vibrant cultural centre for Manchester and the region. Each year we showcase an ambitious programme inspired by the world's greatest stories: stories that have the power to change the way we see the world. To us, that means taking artistic risks, working as part of exciting partnerships, seeking out bold collaborations and championing new talent. Of course, great-storytelling shouldn't be confined to the stage. Whether we're training a new generation of theatre-makers, creating adventurous new work with over 60s, working with local communities or being inspired by the work of new writers, we're committed to creating more and more opportunities for those who want to get involved. Housed in one of the most beautiful buildings in the city, you only need to step inside to begin a journey into the world of the Royal Exchange Theatre. Come on in! We want to share it with you.

Accessibility

ENTERING THE BUILDING A spacious glass lift at the St. Ann’s Square entrance offers equality of access to the Great Hall, which houses the Theatre, Box Office, Information Point, Theatre Shop, Rivals Cafe & Bar, Accessible Toilets and Cloakroom, as well access to The Studio and Rivals Restaurant. There are also steps to the Royal Exchange Theatre at both the Cross Street entrance and St. Ann’s Square entrance; these steps have railings on both sides. Doors at the entrance to the theatre are automatic to enable easy opening. The theatre has accessible toilets, including an alarm system and mirror. These are located near the Cross Street entrance. Both the Theatre and Studio spaces are accessible to wheelchair users. The Theatre and The Studio have six wheelchair spaces. It is possible for companions to sit alongside wheelchair users in both auditoria. Please book any wheelchair spaces in advance when you book your tickets so that we can reserve them and the adjoining seats for anyone else in your party. Wheelchairs are available for patrons who would like to use them, and can be accessed by contacting a member of the theatre staff. Half-price tickets are available to disabled patrons for all performances. If applicable, an additional half-price ticket is also available for a companion. This discount applies to all seats except the lowest priced tickets.

Accessible Performances

Relaxed Performances are designed to welcome anyone who will benefit from a more relaxed performance environment and who might be anxious about attending the theatre for a range of reasons. For each Relaxed Performance we make small changes to the staging, there is a relaxed attitude to noise and movement and we have breakout areas for use during the performance. Additional resources including visual guide to the theatre and the productions are available in advance to support people who are visiting the Theatre for these performances. Everyone is very welcome to attend our Relaxed Performances, regardless of whether or not you 'require' the special conditions that they offer. They are an inclusive, enjoyable experience for all. The theatre offers audio-described performances designed to improve the experience of visually impaired and blind attenders. As well as listening to the dialogue on stage, the visually impaired customer wears a headset and listens to a live description of the action on stage, provided by a fully-trained audio-describer. The audio description supplements the voice of the performers by explaining the emotions and actions of each scene, with descriptions only taking place in between dialogue. Captioning converts the spoken word into text, giving people with hearing loss access to live performance. In captioning, the words appear on a screen at the same time as they are sung or spoken. Captions also include sound effects and offstage noises
