Outdoors - Chapter 4

Lovely - albeit small - grounds with reasonable access to many areas

3.5

This review is especially helpful for those who have or use the following: Wheelchair, Mobility Scooter

Overview

Although the hall is inaccessible (theres a substantial flight of steps), it is under restoration and there isn't much of it currently open to the public - so the gardens are in fact the main attraction. Mostly the paths are good though there's a fair proportion which are gravel so not good for most manual wheelchairs or theses on foot. Staff and volunteers were lovely. The place isn't open every day at some times of year so check first . The church at the rear of the site is accessible and again volunteers were exemplary in making sure I knew I could get inside.

Transport & Parking

2

The car park slopes slightly and is deep, uneven gravel - so difficult to wheel or walk on. There can't have been many disabled spaces as we had to park in a non disabled space and couldn't see any accessible parking.

Access

Mostly the paths are good though there's a fair proportion which are deep gravel so not good for most manual wheelchairs or those on foot. The church at the rear of the site is now open and accessible. The way into the stables area (where cafe is) is a bit uneven but not too precarious. Entrance is via shop which as great access (spacious and level). There's a gentle winding ramp from the rear of the shop up to the gardens. The sunken garden can't be accessed as there are steps and no ramp - it is able to be seen though from the upper level.

Toilets

Didn't use it but giving them the benefit of the doubt - it looked fine from a distance! This was the loo in a temporary building near the stables area. There are other loos near the woodland walk start, however these do NOT include a disabled loo. The accessible loo is not specifically marked on the map.

Staff

5

All staff and volunteers were friendly and offered specific advice on access, routes etc. The lady on duty inside the building saw that my family had left me outside while they went in and she came out specifically to check I was ok and to see if she could tell me anything , and was I finding the access ok.

Anything else you wish to tell us?

Dogs are allowed in the grounds and gardens. The map provided doesn't contain any access information or show the disabled loo - this is something the NT should consider when they update the map next. The deep gravel paths are very hard to wheel on so an obvious improvement would be to replace these with a firmer surface. A ramp into the sunken garden would also greatly enhance access for disabled visitors.
