St Magnus Cathedral is a 12th century church in the heart of Kirkwall, capital of the Orkney Islands. It was a major site of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages, and has been a place of worship for nearly 900 years. Today we welcome visitors from all over the world.

Disabled Access Information Provided by St Magnus Cathedral

Disabled Access at St Magnus Cathedral

The cathedral has an accessible entrance at the side of the building, which is signposted from the main entrance. The no-step access is wide enough for anything up to the size of a medium-size mobility buggy, but the door is heavy and does not have automatic opening, so wheelchair users will need assistance. Most of the cathedral is level access, and there are some areas with ramps that enable access to raised areas. The far east end (known as St Rognvald's Chapel) is accessed by three stone steps and does not have a ramp. The cathedral upper levels (accessed on guided tours only) are not fully accessible for disabled visitors, as access involves steep stone steps and handrails. Carers accompanying clients may attend our guided tours for free. There is written interpretation on site and staff available to answer questions. There is a hearing loop system in place for concerts and services.

There are spaces for 3-4 vehicles on the cathedral parking area in front of the building. There is a sign saying that this is a disabled parking area, but there are no defined bays.

The toilets have step-free access. The door to the disabled toilet and the cubicle itself are large enough for a power wheelchair. There is a cord for emergencies. The tap is 'easy turn'.

A designated accessible toilet designed for wheelchair users and others with visible and non-visible accessibility requirements is available within the main public areas.
